Australia has to be one of the most beautiful countries. You will find amazing beaches, wildlife, and natural wonders.
There’s so much to do and see in Australia. The best way to travel around Australia, to explore this beautiful country, is to cruise at your own pace, towing a caravan.
We have some tips for you to get started on your dream trip around Australia if you want to experience nomad life.
Tips for traveling around Australia in a Caravan
What will you do?
A reliable, comfortable, and well-maintained caravan/camper trailer and tow vehicle is the best foundation for a successful and safe adventure.
There are many options for road trips in Australia. It’s up to you and your family to choose the best combination.
Do your research before you pack your home. Consider your travel plans, budget, and what kind of lifestyle you want while on the road.
We found that there was always a compromise with every caravan and camper trailer option. Make sure to prioritize what is most important.
Our Choice
We have two young children, aged 2 and 5, and wanted to be able to pull up at our destination and step in’.
We have made beds and a fully equipped kitchen.
Our little house is a treasure, and we love it.
This compromise is, however, that we tow an 8.5-meter, 3-tonne box on wheels while we travel Australia… and that consumes lots of fuel.
Our options for where to tow our house are limited.
We love to explore remote areas off-road as we travel across Australia. Therefore, we decided to bring a tent along with us. This is great for our little adventures outside of our caravan.
Your local caravan and camping fair is a great place to view all the available caravan/camper trailer types and to chat with the experts.
Safety First – Weights and Towing Regulations
Although I don’t mean to sound like a “stick in the mud”, the act of touring Australia in a caravan isn’t something you should take lightly.
To ensure your safety, there are strict rules for caravanning.
There are restrictions on the weight of your caravan and the vehicle that you can tow it.
You need to be able to tow large objects with concentration and skill. This is why you should take the time to learn about it.
You can take a caravan towing class to help you prepare for your trip.
Directions for Travel
It all depends on what season you are traveling, how long you plan to stay there and where you’re going.
The climate in Australia’s northern region is more tropical. It is hot and humid during the summer and wet in winter. However, the southern regions are cooler with cool winters and mild summers.
You’ll want to do the big lap around Australia in the winter, like the Northern Territory or Queensland. Then, you will want to go South for the summer, exploring places such as the Great Ocean Road.
First Aid and Emergency Survival
You will need safety gear if you plan to travel to Australia in remote areas with children like ours.
We have a satellite phone which allows us to make emergency calls from anywhere in Australia.
You can also travel with an emergency tracking device, such as an EPIRB (or PLB) that sends out an SOS signal. These small phones are tiny and will allow emergency services to track your signal to help you.
A UHF radio can be added to your vehicle, which is a great idea, especially if you travel around Australia or visit remote areas. If you enjoy off-road adventure and 4WD driving, a winch and vehicle recovery kit are also good ideas.
Extra fuel, spare jerry cans and an offline GPS navigation system may be required.
