In Western Australia’s remote wilderness, Mitchell Falls is an extraordinary waterfall. Although it is a little bit of a trek to reach Mitchell Falls, the stunning views and beautiful landscapes surrounding Mitchell Falls make it worth the effort.
It doesn’t matter if you’re in Broome or just off Gibb River Road; a visit to Mitchell Falls will be unforgettable.
Mitchell Falls, an icon in the Kimberley, is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most magnificent waterfalls. Four tiers of sandstone form multiple waterfalls that tumble into sparkling emerald pools. You can see the park best from the air, with stunning views of Mitchell Plateau.
There are several ways to visit Mitchell Falls. You can take day tours from Kununnara or drive from Gibb River Road. We chose to visit Mitchell Falls as a day trip to save time, wear and tear on our vehicle and save time. To get to Mitchell Falls, you will need 4WD. The track is also slow. We could see the area without damaging our van, and it saved us hours of driving.

Our Day Trip To Mitchell Falls In Western Australia
Morning: Scenic Flight From Kununurra To Mitchell Plateau
Kingfisher Tours picked us up from our caravan park at 6 AM to get us started on the day bright and early. At 6 AM, we left Hidden Valley RV Park and headed to Kununurra Airport, picking up a few passengers.
We boarded a Cessna airplane and took off for a breathtaking 2-hour scenic flight over the Kimberley wilderness. It was a unique view to see Kununurra and Wyndham from the air.
Mid-Day: 4WD Tour And Helicopter Ride Over Mitchell Falls
We jumped into our comfortable 4WD vehicle and set off for adventure upon arrival at the Mitchell Plateau Aerodrome. We drove the 18km through the stunning but bumpy Livingstonia palms forests to reach the plateau. Every bump and corrugation made it worth our while.
We arrived at Mitchell Falls Campground and headed to the HeliSpirit Base. It is a must to take a helicopter flight over the falls. There were many people with the same idea. It is important to remember that Mitchell Falls helicopter flights are also available for Kingfisher Tours so it can be quite busy. Day-trippers, campers, and other tour groups are keen to fly over the falls.
Our excitement was high when it was our turn to board the ship. It was amazing to see Mitchell Falls from the air in all its glory. The helicopter has no doors, so you have an unobstructed view over the falls. It’s certain to make your trip memorable. Although the ride was brief, it felt much longer than expected and was stunning from beginning to end.
Afternoon: Waterfalls walk and picnic lunch
We were dropped off by our helicopter at Mitchell Falls. We started our hike around Mitchell Falls from this point. We took our time and walked around the falls, taking in the sights from every angle. Mick, our guide, was happy to take photos along the way and point out the best Insta-worthy photo opportunities.
